WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 6, 2016) -
Rollins (9-11, 4-7 SSC) gave No. 14 Nova Southeastern (19-3,
11-1) everything that they could handle on Saturday afternoon, but
eventually fell in overtime, 70-64.
Three of the five Tars starters played over 34 minutes with Marie
Gilbert (19 points in 34 minutes) and Tanaya
Jones (18 points in 34 minutes) providing much of the offense.
Jones' 18 set a new career best while senior Cassidy
Bailey finished with six points, four rebounds, and four
assists in 35 minutes. Freshman Tianna
Rosser netted eight points off the bench and grabbed a team
best and career high, 15 rebounds.
Monaye Merritt scored 18 and grabbed nine boards for the Sharks
on 6-12 shooting while Kayla Wright poured in 17 in 21 minutes. Ida
Krogh added 13 points and seven rebounds.
As a team, Rollins shot 35 percent for the game and hit 14-18
from the line. Nova SE finished at 38 percent from the field,
including 4-18 from beyond the arc. The Sharks edged the Tars on
the boards, 43-41.
The first quarter was played relatively even, with neither team
leading by more than three the whole period as Rollins took a 12-10
lead into the second.
Late in the second quarter, the game would tie for the seventh
time, this time at 20-20 at the 3:17 mark after a pair of Bailey
free throws.
The Sharks then would rattle off an 11-4 run to take the biggest
lead of the half, 31-24, before eventually taking a five point lead
into the break.
The Tars would battle back in the third, coming all the way back
to lead by four, 39-34 with 1:43 left in the quarter. NSU would
come to tie at 41-41 heading to the fourth. The 41-41 tie was the
12th of the game at that point.
The fourth followed the same script as Nova Southeastern led
three different times and Rollins led twice. The Tars had a chance
to end it during the final seconds, as Rollins had possession down
58-57 with 22 seconds left. Jones drove down the lane and was
fouled before going on to split her two free throws to force
overtime.
The Tars jumped out to a four-point lead, 62-58, a minute and
half into extra period but the Sharks came back and closed with a
12-2 spurt to survive the upset bid.
Rollins will be back in action on Wednesday, February 10,
traveling to Florida Southern. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. Fans can
