LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (February 19, 2016) -
The Rollins softball team split on day one of the ESPN Wide World
of Sports Citrus Classic. The Tars topped the Knights of Queens
College (N.Y.) 3-1 in game one, but eventually fell to No. 1 North
Georgia, 7-2, in game two.
Rollins overall record rests at 4-3-1 while North Georgia moves
to 7-4 and Queens (N.Y.) goes to 0-1 on the year.
The Tars used small ball in game one to get past the Knights.
Rollins got on the board first after Sid
Masso reached on a single to right field in the bottom of the
third. Masso advanced after Hailee
Keisling put down a well-placed sacrifice bunt. Jule
Kranz then singled to left field allowing Masso to score from
second.
Grace
Street kept the Knights silent through four innings as the Tars
got back on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Brittany
Johnson led off with a walk before Chelsea
Reed advanced her on a sacrifice bunt. Street helped her own
cause by singling to right field to score Johnson giving Rollins a
2-0 lead.
Rollins would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth
after Tiffany
Osmanski singled to center field scoring Kranz from second to
extend the lead to 3-0. The Knights would add one in the top of the
seventh, but that would be it as Rollins sealed the victory.
Street claimed the victory as she collected three strikeouts and
four hits. Niki
Fogle picked up the save as the senior allowed two hits and one
walk.
The second game saw the Tars take on defending National
Champion, North Georgia. The Nighthawks would take the early lead
after taking advantage of a double by Meredith Heyer that scored
Jessica Finch.
North Georgia would add two more in the bottom of the third and
fourth to extend the lead to 5-0. Rollins would get one back in the
top of the fifth after Chelsea
Reed led off with a triple and eventually scored on an RBI
ground out by Masso making it 5-1.
The Tars threatened again in the top of the sixth after Courtney
Durbin singled to center field scoring Keisling from second.
That is the closest the Tars would get as North Georgia put up two
more in the bottom of the sixth to claim the 7-2 victory.
Fogle was hit with the loss as the senior allowed 12 hits six
innings moving her record to 2-3.
The Tars will be back in action on Saturday as they take on
Dominican (N.Y.) and Illinois-Springfield at the ESPN Wide World of
Sports Citrus Classic. For the latest news, updates, and
