WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 14, 2016) - The
Tars secured a series win with the help of an offensive onslaught.
Rollins used a pair of six run frames to lead them to a 20-1
victory over the Bentley Falcons on Sunday afternoon. With the win
Rollins improves to 4-5 on the year, and sit at 1-2 in the Sunshine
State Conference. Bentley falls to 1-5 on the season.
Every Rollins starter notched at least one hit on the
afternoon. Leadoff man, Nick
Breen, finished 4-5 with three RBI. Reigning SSC Player of the
Week, Tyler
Fairbanks continued his hot streak, going 3-5 with two RBI. Michael
Maloney went 3-6 and batted in five runs in his first start of
the season. Christopher
Corbett launched his first homerun of the year. Freshman, Isaiah
Russell had his most successful day at the plate of the young
season, going 3-5 and scoring three runs.
Four pitchers combined to give up only one run on five hits for
the Tars. Brian
Auerbach earned the win throwing the first five innings, giving
up only three hits and striking out four. Josh
Stewart saw his first action of the season, throwing one inning
of relief. Kyle
Hintz made his first appearance on the mound, striking out two
in one inning of work. Matt
Hendricks closed the game out for the Tars, pitching two
innings, giving up one run on one hit, and striking out two.
The Tars started quickly, putting four runs on the board in the
first inning. With the bases loaded Mike
Dolan reached on an error, sending Breen across the plate.
Fairbanks scored on the next batter, when Grant
Ashline hit a single to left field. Maloney recorded an RBI on
a fielder's choice that sent Mike
Purcell home. Corbett then hit a sacrifice fly to left field,
scoring Dolan. The Tars stretched their lead by a run in the
second. Rollins capitalized on Russell's leadoff double; Fairbanks
sending the shortstop home on an infield single. At the end of the
second inning the score was 5-0.
Rollins first six run frame came in the bottom of the fifth.
Purcell and Dolan both reached base to lead off the inning. A
Maloney single scored Purcell. With two runners on, Corbett hit a
three run homer over the left field wall. Before the end of the
inning Breen would double in Peter
Nicoletto and Russell to extend the lead to 11-0.
The Tars put up another six spot in the sixth inning. Another
Maloney single scored Ashline and Dolan. Then, with two outs,
Nicoletto sparked a rally with a triple. Russell knocked him in
with a single up the middle. Breen scored Russell with a double to
left field. Fairbanks doubled to right field, sending Breen home,
and Fairbanks came across the plate courtesy of a Dolan single.
The Tars lead 17-0 after six innings.
Bentley pulled one run back in the top of the eighth when Justin
Ashworth drove in Mike Muir. Rollins again pulled away in the
bottom of the frame. Breen scored on a Purcell double. Dolan hit
a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Thomas
Boyajian, and Purcell scored the twentieth run on a Maloney
single to right center field.
The Tars return to action on Saturday, February 20 for a double
header with the Claflin Panthers; first pitch is scheduled for 1:00
p.m.
