SET-UP:
The Tars started the 2016-17 season with a pair of
convincing victories at the Rollins Tip-off Classic over the
weekend and will look to continue the momentum rolling into a trip
to Embry-Riddle Wednesday. Led by its defense, Rollins beat Saint
Michael's 76-63 to open the year and picked up a key South Region
win over LeMoyne-Owen 72-54. The Eagles are also 2-0 on the year,
posting wins over Lindenwood (66-61) at home and on the road at
Flagler (78-65). ERAU head coach Lisa Nuxol-Wilson is leading the
Eagles into their third-ever season while the Tars Glenn Wilkes
Jr. is in his 31st year and is one of the winningest
coaches in Division II with a record of 662-227.
WHO TO WATCH:
Rollins: Fifth-year senior forward Marie
Gilbert leads the Sunshine State Conference in scoring,
averaging 20 points a game. She is also ninth in the league with
6.5 rebounds a night while shooting 7-of-11 from 3-point range. Julia
Ingler averages 10.5 points a game while Jasmine
Stone is putting up 9.0 points a night. Tanaya
Jones leads the Tars and is fourth in the SSC with 5.0 assists
per game.
Embry-Riddle: Mercedes Jorge is the Eagles top-player through
two games, averaging 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. She
scored 30 and hauled in 10 rebounds against Flagler while shooting
12-16 from the field. Sabrina Whiting is averaging 14.0 points a
night while Lauren Ellenberger and Sigrid Sandstrom are each
netting nine a game. Ellenberger is the top distributer with 6.5
assists a night.
NOTES:
Rollins is 2-0 all-time against Embry-Riddle with both
wins coming last season; 63-54 in Daytona Beach and most recently
71-57 in Winter Park.
Julia
Ingler is 13th all-time in Rollins 3-pointers made
with 109. She is seven away from tying All-American Larissa
McDonough for a spot in the top-15. She is also 13th
all-time in percentage, hitting 37-percent from long range for her
career.
Marie
Gilbert ranks 17th all-time in blocks with 49; 18
behind 16th place.
Tanaya
Jones continues to climb up the Tars all-time assist chart,
sitting 15th with 271 and needing eight to pass Jeri
Ferree for 14th place. She is also 12th in
steals with 190, 11 behind Kim Tayrien for 11th.
