SAVANNAH, Ga. (February 22, 2015) After
trailing in both games Sunday afternoon in Savannah, Ga., Rollins
stormed back to finish the trip with a pair of 4-3 victories over
Newberry and Armstrong State. Niki
Fogle (6-0) moved into second place on the all-time win list
after collecting both victories on the day. The junior tossed 13.2
innings and struck out 16 batters while holding both teams to a
combined three earned runs.
Rollins continues its hot start to the seson, pushing its record
to 10-0.
Rollins fell behind early against Newberry, allowing the Wolves
to plate three in the first inning. Rollins got one back in the
fourth when Chelsea
Reed led off with a single, was bunted to second by Hali
Marshall, and scored on Sid
Masso's single to center. Hailee
Keisling made it a one-run game at 3-2 in the fifth with a
one-out solo home run to right center.
Reed led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run.
Marshall followed her effort with a double and came around to score
to give Rollins the lead for good at 4-3.
Fogle entered the game with one out in the first inning and shut
down the Wolves the rest of the way. The junior held Newberry to a
pair of hits over the 6.2 innings and struck out eight.
Chelsea
Reed went 3-3 and scored two runs, including her second home
run in as many days.
The second game of the day was a back and forth affair, with the
Tars striking first and last. Keisling and Durbin singled and Reed
doubled to help the Tars build a two run advantage in the first
inning. The Pirates came back to take the lead in the third 3-2
with the help of a two run homer.
Rose
Stevens led off the fifth inning, stole second, was sacrificed
to third by Keisling, and then was singled home by Marshall to tie
the game at 3-3.
Designated Player Hannah
Horwath led off the bottom of the sixth with a slicing double
down the left field line. After pinch runner Bailey
Miller entered the game, the Tars took to small ball to push
the winning run across. Masso followed with a sacrifice bunt to
advance Miller to third and Johnson drove her in with a bloop
single to short left field.
Fogle captured her second win of the day by holding the
hot-hitting pirates to three earned runs over seven innings. She
also racked up eight strikeouts without walking a batter.
Already playing with a bandaged arm, Brittany
Johnson reached another milestone in the fourth inning by tying
the program record for most career times being hit by a pitch
(21).
The Tars will be back in action Wednesday evening when they will
host Albany State for a double header in Winter Park. First pitch
is slated for 6 p.m.
