TAMPA, Fla. (November 13, 2015) - The Tars
opened their season on Friday night against No. 13 Union in game
one of the Spartan Challenge, pushing the Bulldogs to the brink but
eventually fell in overtime, 76-68.
Rollins drops to 0-1 on the young season while Union improves to
1-0.
Junior Marie
Gilbert led the way for the Tars offensively, putting up a
career high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and an assist.
Cassidy
Bailey, Julia
Ingler and Kasey
Drayton each chipped in eight points in the season opener while
Jen
Farrell finished with six assists. Freshman Tianna
Rosser grabbed a team high seven rebounds in her Rollins
debut.
For the Bulldogs, Chelsea Bodiford led all scorers with 18
points on 5-9 shooting and recorded a team best five assists. Tiara
Caldwell finished with 15 while Jada Perkins poured in 13 with five
rebounds and four assists.
As a team, the Tars shot 25-71 for the game while Union made
44.8 percent of their shots, including 7-17 from deep. The Bulldogs
outrebounded Rollins, 46-38.
The first quarter was all Bulldogs, leading by as much as nine
at the 4:14 mark. A Drayton three in the final seconds of the
period cut Rollins' deficit to six at 22-16 heading into the
second.
The second and third quarters were much of the same as the Tars
couldn't quite pull within less than five and found themselves down
21 midway through the third period.
Rollins then showed resiliency and started slowly chipping away,
cutting the No. 13 Bulldogs' lead down to 10, 55-45, at the end of
the third on another Drayton three.
The Tars' deficit would balloon back to 12 at the 7:04 mark of
the fourth before an 8-0 Rollins run would pull the game to within
four, the closest it had been since the game's opening minutes.
A layup by Caldwell would push it back to a six-point game
before another Rollins run, this time a 6-0 burst capped off with a
Tanaya
Jones layup in the final seconds, sent the game to overtime
tied at 64-64.
Unfortunately, the Tars were outscored 12-4 in the extra period,
eventually falling, 76-68.
The Tars will come right back on Saturday, Nov. 14 for game two
of the Spartan Challenge against West Florida at 5 p.m. Fans can
