WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 25, 2014) - Rollins
needs a weekend sweep to capture a piece of the Sunshine State
Conference title and took a big first step Friday, beating Nova
Southeastern 1-0 at MLK Jr. Park.
Niki
Fogle was spectacular in the circle and Kristie
Hoeffer supplied another timely RBI to get Rollins (35-11, 17-5
SSC) the win.
Fogle won the pitcher's dual, scattering four hits with one walk
and four strikeouts to improve to 23-5 on the year. Jennie Von
Doellen took the loss for NSU (30-18, 15-7 SSC), surrendering only
three hits and one run with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Sharks brought the pressure early as Melanie Spicola reached
on an error to lead off and was sacrificed to second. Fogle then
found a groove and put the next six down in order.
Meagan Lee singled in the Sharks third for their first hit. Courtney
Durbin later broke up Von Doellen's no-hitter with a double to
left in the fourth, but was stranded at second.
Still scoreless, NSU threaten in the sixth, putting two on after
a Spicola single and Katrina Ammons walk. Fogle then got the next
batter to fly out, ending the Sharks hope at a score.
Jule
Kranz pinched hit to lead off the Rollins sixth and drew a key
walk. Hailee Keislig moved her to second on a sac bunt and Durbin
popped up to center for the second out.
Hoeffer then drilled a shot to the left center wall that scored
Kranz and gave Rollins its 1-0 lead.
Fogle took it from there, but not without last inning fireworks.
NSU put the would-be tying run on second, but that would be it as
Rollins earned the big win.
Durbin, Hoeffer and Brittany
Johnson had the hits for the Tars.
Rollins and Nova Southeastern will meet for a double header on
Saturday, April 26 with the first pitch for game one slated for 1
p.m. Should Rollins pick up the sweep, it would guarantee a share
of the 2014 SSC Championship.
