WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 30, 2014) - Rollins
claimed both legs of the double-dip against Saint Leo Sunday at MLK
Park by scores of 2-0 and 8-4. Co-captain Veronica
Alred reached base five times by going 3-4 with two walks at
the plate. The senior catcher homered and drove in three in the
doubleheader.
After the pair of victories, Rollins jumps to 27-10 (10-5 SSC)
on the season and remains second in the conference standings, while
Saint Leo drops to 23-15 (5-7 SSC).
Game One featured a pitchers duel between Stephanie
Sullivan and Saint Leo starter Sarah Steiner. The game remained
scoreless for five and a half innings until Rollins finally broke
through with a pair of runs in the sixth. Sullivan (W, 10-5)
notched the victory for Rollins by tossing a complete game shutout.
She allowed five hits and struck out three in the contest.
Rollins started a rally in the sixth with back-to-back singles
by Courtney
Durbin and Kristie
Hoeffer. Alred knocked home the first run of the game with a
single through the right side of the infield, scoring Durbin. With
runners on first and third, Alred was caught stealing at second,
allowing Hoeffer to advance home on the play. The two runs proved
to be the only scoring of the entire contest as Rollins took Game
One by a score of 2-0.
Niki
Fogle (W, 16-5) picked up the win in the second contest by
tossing all seven innings. The sophomore allowed four runs on eight
hits while striking out six Lions.
Rollins jumped out to a 2-0 first inning advantage in Game Two.
Hoeffer drove home Hailee
Keisling with an RBI single through the right side to get the
Tars on the scoreboard. The center fielder later scored the second
Rollins run on a perfectly executed squeeze play by Alred.
The Tars added a couple of insurance runs - an RBI single by
Keisling in the second and a solo home run by Alred in the fifth -
to push the score to 4-0.
Saint Leo loaded the bases in the sixth but the Tars managed to
escape with only one run surrendered.
The left fielder Durbin extended the Tars lead to 7-1 in the
bottom of the sixth frame with a three-run blast over the left
field fence. Hoeffer followed with her conference-leading eleventh
home run of the season to center. This was the third time this
season, and the second time this week, that the Tars have hit
back-to-back home runs.
The Lions pushed three runs across in the seventh but it proved
to be too little, too late with Rollins taking the second leg
8-4.
Rollins will hop on the Beachline and travel down to Melbourne,
Fla. next weekend to face Florida Tech in an SSC Saturday-Sunday
showdown. The doubleheader on April 5 and the single game matchup
on April 6 both feature 1 p.m. start times.
