WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 23, 2013) - 9th
ranked Rollins started slow in game one and even fell behind in
game two but escaped Saturday's double header with visiting Georgia
Southwestern with a pair of victories, downing the 'Canes 7-0 in
game one and fought back to win game two, 6-4.
Both teams came out flat in game one, locked in a scoreless tie
through two and half innings of play.
It was in their half of the third that the Tars cracked the
scoreboard, scoring one on an RBI single up the middle by junior Kristie Hoeffer.
After a scoreless fourth, Rollins added a pair in the fifth to
extend the lead to 3-0. It was senior Hannah Lovestrand who came through this time for the
Tars. delivering a two out double to right center to drive in
two.
Tars started Niki Fogle again held GSW scoreless in the sixth
before Rollins blew the game open in the bottom of the inning,
scoring four runs on three hits and two costly 'Canes errors to
take the 7-0 lead.
The touchdown lead was more than enough for Fogle, as she
retired the GSW batters in order in the seventh to secure the
victory in game one. The freshman gave up no runs and only three
hits in seven innings pitched en route to her team leading seventh
win.
Hoeffer, Lovestrand, and Veronica Alred each recorded multi-hit games in game
one.
GSW jumped out to the early one run lead in game two but the
Tars answered right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring one
of their own when freshman Jule Kranz earned the free pass with the bases loaded
to tie it at one run apiece after the first.
The Canes' came back to score three in the third, getting to
Tars' game two starter Stephanie Sullivan who was pitching in her first game
back from injury.
Rollins quickly began to chip away at the deficit, taking one
back in the bottom of the inning when Alred and Lovestrand led off
with back to back doubles with Alred coming around to score,
cutting the lead to 4-2 after three innings.
Fogle relieved Sullivan in the fourth, keeping the Tars within
two heading to the bottom of the inning.
Aimee Halpin and Brittany Johnson led off the inning with a pair of
singles, bringing up Hoeffer with two on and nobody out. Hoeffer
would answer the call, sending a laser over the fence in left
center, giving the Tars the 5-4 lead.
Rollins would score another in the inning on a Kranz sac fly to
right, which would turn out to be the last run of the game.
Fogle cruised the rest of the way, earning her eighth victory
and fourth in as many days.
Alred and Lovestrand again both recorded multi-hit games in game
two with Halpin also joining in, going 2-3 with a run scored.
