WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 11, 2012) -
Rollins, the No. 2 seed, matched up with No. 3 seeded Tampa on
Sunday in the NCAA Championship second round, eventually falling to
the Spartans by a score of 1-0.
Sunday marked the fourth time the teams have met this season,
with the Tars owning a 1-0-2 record in their previous three
meetings.
Rollins threatened right out the gates when sophomore Azure Dorsey got free in the top right corner of the
box but her shot sailed just wide of the far post.
Aside from a shot by Tampa sophomore Gabby Russo that sailed
high in the ninth minute, neither team would mount much of an
attack until midway through the second half. It was then the
Spartans broke through.
Russo played a cross from the right corner through the box,
right to the feet of a wide open Courtney Peffley who one-timed it
into the back of the net.
The Tars had a chance in the waning moments when senior Ali Schrader got tangled up with Spartan goal keeper
Kori Butterfield with the ball trickling towards the endline.
Dorsey chased it down but couldn't get much on the shot as it was
easily deflected out of bounds by the Tampa defense.
For Rollins, Dorsey and sophomore Emma Jones were solid in helping to create offense
while seniors Anita Cox and Whitney Rohrer had exceptional games in defense,
allowing just four shots.
The Tars' season comes to an end with a final record of
12-5-2.
Tampa now advances to the round of sixteen on Nov.
16th and will face West Florida.
