MELBOURNE, Fla. (November 9, 2012) - Ten
different players scored for fourth-ranked Rollins as the Tars
cruised to season opening 72-49 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at
the Florida Tech Tipoff Classic.
Ashley Losch hit 6-of-8 from the field and led
Rollins (1-0) with 13 points off the bench. Emmalee Schill and Sarah Blackburn posted identical double-doubles with
11 points and 10 rebounds.
Laishka Chaves netted a game-high 21 points to pace Mayaguez
(0-1) while Ashley Fermin added six points and seven boards.
The heavily favored Tars couldn't shake the Janes to start with
Rollins leading just 10-8 after five minutes of play. Losch then
entered the game and led a 14-2 run to give the Tars a 24-10 edge
midway through the half. The sophomore scored six-points during the
spurt that was punctuated by a Jen Farrell 3-pointer.
Rollins maintained the advantage and took a 42-23 lead into
halftime.
Points were hard to come by for both teams to start the second
half. Losch drained a jumper at the 15:11 mark that served as
Rollins' first points of the period and stopped a 7-0 Mayaguez
run.
The Tars led 48-30 with 11:50 to play before a more than
two-minute scoreless streak was snapped by a Sarah Taylor free throw. Rollins led by 23 with five
minutes left and kept the same advantage at the final buzzer.
Rollins shot 51 percent in the first half and ended the game 42
percent (28-66) from the field. The defense held Mayaguez to 38
percent (19-50) shooting and forced 24 turnovers. The Tars
committed 13 miscues and earned a 47-31 rebounding edge.
The Tars return to action on Saturday, Nov. 10 against Puerto
Rico Rio Piedras in day two of the Florida Tech Tipoff Classic.
