WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 2, 2011)- The Rollins softball team captured a huge win against the twelfth ranked University of Tampa Spartans, Saturday afternoon, 3-2. Rollins improves to 33-1 on the season and still maintains a perfect conference mark at 10-0. Tampa falls to 10-3 in conference play with a doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow starting at noon.

Each team was held in check by the opposing pitching staffs, with neither team able to scratch any runs across. Rollins and Tampa threatened multiple times, but Hope Bitzer and Deanna Henriott shut down the chances.

The Spartans struck first on the scoreboard tallying two runs in the sixth inning as Elizabeth Milhan and Brittany Joseph picked up the RBIs for the Spartans. Bitzer was able to get out of the inning with only allowing two runs after the Spartans were able to load the bases.

Rollins came right back in the bottom half of the inning to score a run to cut the deficit in half after a catch and carry was called that allowed the Tars to score Brittney Pumpelly after Jessica Moreland was called out on the play.

Bitzer shutdown the Spartans in the seventh inning to give her team a chance to win the game in the bottom half of the seventh. After Meredith Foster reached on a leadoff single and then advanced to second on a fielding error the Tars had a runner in scoring position with no outs. Veronica Alred took a pitch from Henriott deep to left center field over the fence to win the game for the Tars.

Bitzer allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out 11 batters en route to her 14th victory.

Rollins will finish the series up with a doubleheader starting at noon tomorrow from Lake Island Park.
