WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 12, 2011) - A solo
home run by Jessica
Moreland was all Rollins needed as the sixth-ranked Tars
defeated Florida Tech 1-0 on Tuesday.
The victory opens up a full two-game lead for Rollins (38-2) in
the Sunshine State Conference standings with a record of 15-1.
Florida Tech drops to 22-18 overall and 7-9 in league play.
Hope
Bitzer pitched a gem in the circle and improved to an SSC best
16-0 on the season. The junior scattered just a pair of singles and
fanned four with no walks. Briana Barth took the loss for FIT,
allowing three and one run with four walks and three
strikeouts.
Moreland's dinger and singles by Bitzer and Amber
Pederson comprised the Tars' offense.
Emily Densem went 2-for-3 to lead the Panthers.
Rollins looked to announce its presence with authority in the
first, putting two on with one out. Back-to-back plays by Tech at
the hot corner however, squashed the Tars' rally.
With the game still scoreless in the third, Tech took advantage
of a Rollins one-out error to put runners on the corners, but
Bitzer got the last two outs to maintain the tie.
Moreland's homerun came with one out in the bottom of the sixth
to give the Tars a 1-0 lead. Tech threatened in the top of the
seventh as the Tars committed their third error of the game, but
were never able to move a runner past second.
Rollins and Florida Tech will complete the SSC series with a
doubleheader on Wednesday, April 13 at 5 p.m. Between games, head
coach Michelle
Frew will honor the Tars' four seniors.
