LAIE, Hi. (February 5, 2011)- The Rollins College softball team
started out the 2011 season with a doubleheader sweep of
BYU-Hawaii, Friday afternoon. With the pair of victories the Tars
are 2-0 heading into a Top 25 clash with Hawaii Pacific on
Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader saw the bats come alive
after a long off-season and preseason to post eight runs against
the Seasiders. The Tars continued their hot hitting the second game
to claim the 13-0 victory.
The Rollins offense wasted no time in both games scoring a
combined 21 runs against the Seasiders. Game one of the
doubleheader saw the Tars post eight runs to end the game in six
innings. Just like the offense the defense and pitching was up to
the task.
Kirsten
Frame and the defense posted a no-hitter with the sophomore
hurler collecting 11 strikeouts in four innings of work. Redshirt
freshman Amye
McIntyre came in relief of Frame and punched out four batters
in her two innings of work.
The offense scored run in the first, third, fourth, fifth and
sixth inning to capture the 8-0 victory. The second inning was the
only frame the Seasiders could control the offense of the Tars,
sitting down the first three batters of the inning.
Jessica
Moreland paced the offense with three RBIs, while going 4-for-4
at the plate. Moreland received offensive support from Monica
Meadows, Christine
Roser, Lawna
Hunter and Meredith
Foster with each picking an RBI apiece.
Game two saw the bats and pitching continue to gain strength
with the offense collecting 13 runs on 13 hits and transfer Hope
Bitzer collecting her first win as a Tar.
Bitzer did not disappoint, after coming off an impressive two
years at Seminole State College, the junior used her prowess on the
mound to suppress the Seasider attack. Through five innings or work
Bitzer struck out nine batters, while only surrendering three
hits.
Offensively the Tars capitalized on their chances and took
advantage of four errors from BYU-Hawaii. Moreland continued her
hot hitting going a combined 5-for-8 for the two game set and
collected another two RBIs. Also collecting two RBIs were Nikki
Gouldthread, Veronica
Alred and Christine
Roser. Chipping in an RBI apiece was Amber
Pederson, Bitzer and Meadows to round out the scoring for the
Tars.
Rollins used their speed and smart base running to tack on
important runs, with Tar baserunners advancing on misthrows from
the Seasiders.
The Tars will take on defending National Champion Hawaii Pacific
in doubleheader action starting at 5 p.m. eastern.
