MESA, Ariz. (May 12, 2010) -
The second ranked Rollins women's golf team shot a first round
306 and sits second after day one of the NCAA Division II National
Championship.
Defending champion Nova Southeastern opened up an eight-shot lead,
carding 298 strokes at the par-71 Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
Rollins lurks in second (306) while Tarleton State shot 311 and is
third.
Joanna Coe and Elin Marcsdottir each
turned in rounds of 74 and are tied for third. Coe, who won the
championship as a freshman two years ago, had a consistent round.
After opening with two pars, she bogeyed the par-3 third hole and
finished the front nine with a string of six-straight pars. Coe
started the back-nine with five more pars before bogeying the final
two par-5's to finish three-over par.
Marcsdottir's round was up and down, with five bogeys and two
birdies. She started the day with a birdie on the par-5 first hole
before suffering back-to-back bogeys on three and four and another
on number nine. Marcsdottir had bogeys on 10 and 11, but righted
the ship with a birdie on the par-5, 15th and three straight pars
to finish the round.
Brianna Seo and Daniela
Vargas are tied for 27th with rounds of 79. Seo started tough
with bogeys on four of the first five holes. She put together a run
of six pars before a double-bogey on 12. She then recorded four
pars and two bogeys down the stretch for the eight-over par score.
Vargas slid down hill throughout the round, sitting at two over
after the first six holes. She followed with eighth straight
bogeys, but finished strong with pars on 15 and 16 and back-to-back
birdies on the par-4 17th and par-5 18th.
Fabia Rothenfluh shot 81 and
is tied for 39th. She opened her day with four pars before a bogey
on the fifth, triple-bogey on the sixth and bogey on the seventh.
She went on to card five bogeys and six pars the rest of the
way.
Maria Luz Besio of Newberry shot an even par-71 and leads the field
while Emily Kvidera of Augustana (S.D.) is a shot back in second.
Coe and Marcdottier are part of a group of five golfers in
third.
