MELBOURNE, Fla. (April 20, 2010)- The Rollins softball team took another important step in their quest to add another conference championship by narrowly escaping conference foe Florida Tech, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon. Rollins needed extra innings to escape from Melbourne with a victory and with the win the Tars improve to 36-4 overall and 15-1 in conference play, while Florida Tech falls to 21-22 overall and 8-11 in conference.

The game was a pitcher's duel throughout the whole game as both pitchers only yielded a combined 12 hits and struck out 27 batters.
Freshmen Kirsten Frame broke the single game record for strikeouts in a game as she retired 20 batters on strikes in the 13 inning affair. Frame improves her record to 25-2 and looks poised to guide the Tars to another conference championship.

The bats for the Tars struggled to muster anything against Tiffani Bishop as it took an error to move Lauren Caldwell to third after her double to right field and then a risky play to take off for home on a ground out to third base to score the winning run in the top half of the 13th inning.

The hero offensively was Caldwell, who collected two of the Tars' six hits and was joined by Christine Roser, Amber Pederon, Meredith Foster and Brittney Pumpelly with each collecting a hit.

Florida Tech had a few chances to push across the first run of the game, but could not scratch a run against Frame. The freshmen pitching sensation worked out of a few difficult situations including a bases loaded situation, but the Frame sat down the Panthers to get out of the inning.

Rollins is no stranger to extra inning games after going 12 innings with Flagler earlier this season to capture another hard fought victory.

The Tars look to keep momentum going through the last part of the conference season to seize their second straight conference championship and another berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
The two teams will resume the series with doubleheader action slated for 2 p.m. on Wednesday from Melbourne.
