WINTER PARK, Fla. -
The 28th-ranked Rollins baseball team had its five-game winning
streak snapped after a 16-3 loss to the Barry Buccaneers in a
nonconference showdown, Tuesday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.
The Tars (29-16) were out-hit in the contest 17-7 to the Buccaneers
(28-14).
The lone Tar to record multi-hits was second baseman Josh Band
who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Shortstop Justin
Yount finished with a team-best two RBIs on a 1-for-4
performance. Yount and catcher Ben Hewett tallied a double each to
highlight the Tars' offensively.
Rollins went through five different pitchers in the contest.
Starter Brad
Renner (2-1) fell victim to the loss after tossing four innings
and surrendering three runs on five hits. Garrett Yount, William Krasne and Jordan
Davis pitched the next three innings before Danny
Clark shutdown the Buccaneers in the final two innings
unblemished.
Both teams were slow out of the gate as the teams were tied at zero
at the end of the third. The Buccaneers got on the scoreboard in
the fourth after capitalizing on a couple of Tars' fielding
errors.
Leading 3-0, Barry added five runs in the sixth and secured the
victory in the seventh with an eight-run inning culminated by a
Chris Leon grand slam.
Rollins scored its runs in the seventh and ninth innings. In the
seventh, a Yount sacrifice fly scored Joey Manning from third,
which preceded a Band RBI single. Trailing 16-2, the Tars scored
its final run in the ninth after Band received a one-out walk and
scored on the ensuing at-bat, a Yount double to left center.
For Barry, shortstop Nick Shaw and designated hitter Ryan Garcia
led the team with three hits apiece, while Leon was the game-high
in RBIs with four.
Brian Santana (2-0) picked up the win for the Buccaneers in the 6.1
inning effort. He allowed four hits and two runs in the victory.
James Haugney finished the seventh with no miscues, while Robbie
Conver and Aaron Main pitched the remaining two innings.
The Tars will have their chance at redemption when they travel to
Miami Shores, for a Sunshine State Conference three-game series
against the Bucs. Game one is set for Friday, April 23 at 6
p.m.
