SAN ANTONIO,Texas (September 6, 2009)-
The No.11 ranked Rollins women's soccer team pulled off a narrow
victory against the Abilene Christian Wildcats 1-0, Sunday morning.
Joy Powell provided all the
offense the Tars needed to secure the victory to improve to 3-0-1
on the season.
The game featured a lot of back and forth play as each team
attacked, but the strong presence of the midfielders and back lines
proved too difficult to get past.
The lone tally came in 12th minute as Ashley Waplinger sent in a
cross from the far side that found the foot of Joy
Powell. After taking her touch and settling the ball down
Powell elevated the ball over Wildcat keeper Crissy Lawson's head
to give the Tars the 1-0 lead.
That would be all the offense in the game and was plenty for the
experienced back line and Tars keeper Michelle Dillingham.
Dillingham pitched her fourth shutout of the season as she
collected two saves on the day. Abilene Christian's offense was
stymied by the defense of the Tars as they could only fire off
three shots, all coming in the first half.
Rollins will now travel home and prepare for West Florida on Friday
evening. Last year in the NCAA Tournament the Argos knocked the
Tars out by defeating them 2-0 back on November 21.
The Tars will look to exact some revenge and climb up in the region
rankings.
