WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 13, 2009)- The
Rollins men's soccer team broke out to a early lead, which proved
to be enough to defeat Thomas University 4-2, Sunday afternoon.
Rollins used four first half goals to secure the victory as they
improved to 5-0-1 and Thomas fell to 1-3.
Offensively four different players scored for Rollins as they
amassed 25 shots with nine coming on goal. Adam New started things
off in the ninth minute as Jacob Deloach served a ball
into the box from the left side allowing New to get a foot on it
and take the early 1-0 lead. The Tars would strike again in the
22nd minute with a goal from Bradley Welch off an assist
from New.
The Tars would post two more quick goals in the 31st and 32nd
minute as Dean Walker played an
excellent ball from a Jacob Deloach free kick and
put it past Nighthawk keeper Jan Feldman. Freshman Ryley
Delgado collected his first career goal with the Tars as J.D.
Gruenewald chipped a pass through the defense, which allowed
Delgado to make a run on the ball and he slotted it past Feldman
for the fourth goal of the game.
The lone goal in the first half for the Nighthawks came on a
failed clearing attempt by the Tars and Thomas quickly capitalized
on it.
The teams went into halftime and would come out to different
playing conditions in the second half. Chris Cummings would get the
start for the Tars in the second half spelling starter Aaron
Rokeach who allowed one goal and zero saves between the posts.
Midway through the second half rain started to fall heavily
affecting the footing and travel of the ball. Each team traded
attacks, but no serious challenges were made on either keeper.
In the closing minute of the game Thomas netted their second
goal of the game as Cummings was out of position allowing Alex
Fleming to send it past him with just eight seconds left.
The Tars will look to break into the Top 25 this week with
consecutive wins over ranked opponents in two of their last three
matches.
Next up for the Tars will be the Royals of Warner University on
Wednesday at Cahall-Sandspur field at 7 p.m.
