BOCA RATON, Fla. (May 8, 2009) –
Deadlocked at four points apiece, the top singles spot went to a
tiebreaking third set that didn't go the Tars way as ninth ranked
Rollins was upended by 13th ranked Barry 5-4 in the NCAA Division
II South Region Tournament, Friday.
The loss bounces the Tars out of the tournament and ends their
2009 campaign with a record of 20-3. Barry (17-7) advances to play
top seeded Lynn.
Dominate in doubles play throughout the regular season, the Tars
surprising lost a pair of doubles points. Roshni
Luthra and Allie
Steele downed Mei-Jing Ang and Laime Contreras 8-3 in the No. 2
position to put Rollins up 1-0. The top flighted match faced the
Tars' 22nd ranked Margaret
Junker and Kayli
Ragsdale against the Bucs' 23rd ranked Angie Werschel and Yulia
Kashelkina. The duo from Barry raced out to a quick start and
scored the upset of the Tars top doubles team, 8-3. In the No. 3
match, Holly
Fleming and Stefaniya
Tkach fell to Berit Peterson and Caroline Wendling 9-7.
Barry picked up their third point in the No. 2 singles match as
Wendling defeated Fleming 6-2, 6-1. Junker got the Tars back on
track with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Contreras at No. 4 and Tkach took
Kashelkina 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3. Ragsdale fell to Peterson 6-4, 6-4 at
No. 5, but Steele scored a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Cadet at No. 6 to
keep the Tars alive.
The No. 1 singles match pitted ninth ranked Luthra against 10th
ranked Werschel. In the regular season finale, Luthra scored a 6-1,
6-4 win over her counterpart. Friday, Luthra picked up right where
she left off, taking the first set 6-0. Werschel fought back,
however, winning the second set 6-4 and the third 7-6 after a 10-8
tiebreaker.
