WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Rollins College men's
tennis team was unable to secure a victory against the 19th-ranked
Florida Southern Moccasins, Wednesday evening at Bert W. Martin
Tennis Complex and Copeland Tennis Stadium.
No. 14 Rollins falls to 11-7 and 2-3 in Sunshine State
Conference action, while Florida Southern improves to 11-7 and 3-2
in the conference.
With the match tied at four, Adrian
Tan suffered a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 loss to the Mocs Roman Schirmaier
in the No. 1 slot. Tan outmaneuvered Shirmaier in the first set to
take the early lead. After dropping the second, the two battled in
the final remaining set. Schirmaier took the first game, but Tan
fought back to capture three-straight games. Schirmaier countered
with his serve and broke Tan's serve in his final two attempts to
secure the victory.
In the second spot, the Tars' Neil
Clausen won in straight-sets with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Guenther
Fercher. Clause is now 12-2 on the season and perfect in
conference play.
Jeff
Morris was successful for Rollins in the third position with a
decisive, 6-1, 6-1 thrashing over Nicolas Bigler.
After the Tars two victories, Florida Southern countered with
three of their own. The Mocs claimed wins in the four, five and
six slots in three sets to tie the match. Rollins' Nick
Rowlands and Bill
Rockwood captured wins in the first sets but were unable to
sustain their momentum and fell in the next two. Gustavo
Carvalho captured a win in the second set to tie his match at
one, before slipping in the final set 7-5 to Ben Taylor.
In doubles action, the Tars secured wins in the first and third
slots. Tan and Morris teamed up for the 9-8 victory over
Schirmaier and Fercher. Clausen and Carvalho followed suit with an
8-4 win in the second position.
The Tars return to the courts when it hosts Eckerd, Saturday,
April 4 at 11 a.m.
