WINTER PARK, Fla.
Junior catcher Ben Hewett hit his first homerun of the season, a
solo shot to right field, but it wasn't enough as the Florida
Southern Moccasins defeated the Rollins College Tars baseball team,
5-1 Friday evening at Henley Field.
Hewett led the Tars with his second career blast that tied the game
at one in the second inning. Bryan
Bennett was the only other batter to record a hit, a double to
right center.
Rollins (17-10, 3-4 Sunshine State Conference) was held to two hits
in the contest, while FSC (21-5, 3-1 SSC) blistered the bats with
12. Right fielder Will Cherry led all hitters with a 4-for-5
performance and an RBI. Colin Kaline registered the game-high two
RBIs with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Starting pitcher Stephen Hiscock (4-3) was dealt the loss going
five innings allowing nine hits, five runs, three earned and one
walk, while striking out five. Relief pitcher Alex
Venegas finished the final three innings surrendering three
hits without allowing a run.
For the Mocs, Max Russell (4-0) pitched eight innings giving up two
hits, one run and struck out 10 in the win. Patrick Szczerba
closed out the game in the ninth, striking out two.
FSC struck first in the beginning frame recording four singles.
After a strike out, Robbie Shields hit an infield single to third,
which preceded a Nick Stanley fly out to left. Cherry followed
with a single up the middle and back-to-back infield singles gave
the Mocs the early 1-0 lead.
In the second with two outs, Hewett drilled a 1-0 pitch over the
right field wall to score the Tars' lone run in the game.
The Mocs regained the lead in the bottom of the second and secured
the victory with a three-run fourth inning.
