AMERICUS,Ga.(February 21, 2009)-Senior pitchers
Nicole Anderson and Rachael Foster dominated the Georgia
Southwestern Lady Canes in doubleheader action by scores of 1-0 and
2-0, Saturday afternoon. The first game took nine innings and an
international style tiebreaker for the Tars to prevail and the
second game was more conventional as the Tars pushed across two
runs.
Leading the way for Rollins were senior pitchers Rachael Foster and
Nicole Anderson as they both silenced the bats of the Lady Canes as
they combined to have 28 strikeouts between them. Foster led the
way with 16 and Anderson followed up with 12 strikeouts of her
own.
The first game saw both teams struggle to put the ball in play as
the game went into a tiebreaker situation. It was not until the top
half of the ninth inning that the Tars pushed across one run.
Christine Roser started out on second base and was moved over by a
sacrifice bunt by Missy Thogmartin. This set the table for Jamie
Rausch as she grounded out to the shortstop, but that allowed Roser
to come home for the winning run.
The Lady Canes came up in the bottom half of the ninth, but could
not muster a run as they were able to get two base runners. The
inning saw Gabby Buck thrown out at home plate as she tried to
score, but the throw from Thogmartin to Roser was perfect to throw
buck out.
The night saw the Tars' bats come alive a bit as they collected two
runs on six hits. Rausch and Thogmartin each batted a run in for
the Tars in the third inning. Rollins scores more runs in the third
inning than any other inning as they have 17 runs on the year.
The second game was dominated by Rachael Foster as she recorded 16
strikeouts in seven innings of work. Foster retired 12 Lady Canes
in a row before surrendering a bloop single to center field.
The third inning started out as Rachael Foster reached first on an
error by the second basemen. Roser then singled through the left
side, advancing Foster to second. Thogmartin then singled to right
field moving Roser to second, but Roser advanced to third on the
throw. Jamie Rausch stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to right
field that would score Roser.
After scoring the two runs the Tars and Lady Canes became involved
in a pitcher's duel that would not see either team push across
anymore runs.
Rollins has started the season strong as they improve their
record to 8-1 with their only loss coming to Abilene Christian.
Since the loss the Tars have rattled off seven straight victories
and have outscored their opponents 37 to 4.
