Balanced Attack Gets Tars Past Puerto Rico Rio Piedras

WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 28, 2009) -

Rollins had 11 different players score and dominated the boards as the Tars defeated Puerto Rico Rio Piedras 65-46 in the final game of the Rollins Thanksgiving Classic, Saturday.

Brittainy Daiger and Amber Heistan each tallied 10 points to pace Rollins (5-2). Brook Burgess netted nine off the bench while Paris Moore added eight points and seven assists. Daiger and Kourtnie Berry each pulled down seven rebounds as the Tars beat the Lady Gamecocks (0-4) 40-25 on the boards.

Sonia Roman racked up 16 points with Shakira Rodriguez adding 12 for Rio Piedras.

Rio Piedras scored first, but Rollins rattled off a 14-2 run over the first nine minutes, punctuated by a Jasmine Bradley 3-pointer, to lead by 10 with 11 minutes in the half. Roman hit from long range to get the Gamecocks back on track, but the Tars started to heat up and pushed their lead to 15, 28-13, with five minutes to play and led by 21, 34-13 with just under four minutes in the half.

Both teams went cold the waning moments of the opening period until a Kristina Mingos steal and Heidi Lacks layup put the Tars up 36-17 at the break.

Rollins controlled the tempo in the first five minutes of the second period and built a 46-21 advantage behind eight straight points from Heistan. The Tars continued to roll and led by as much as 30 with 10 minutes to play. Jamie Messer put Rollins up 27 with a trey at the three minute mark before Rio Piedras rattled off a 10-0 run behind a slew of 3-pointers, and cut the Tars lead to 17 with under a minute to play. Messer then put a cap on the day with a jumper in the final seconds, making the final score 65-46.

Rollins shot 46 percent (28-60) from the field and from 3-point range (7-15). The Gamecocks hit 35 percent (17-48) from the floor and just 6-22 (27 percent) from 3 point range.
