Rollins made the most out of 61 trips to the free throw line,
hitting 50 as the 19th ranked Tars downed Saint Leo 84-71 in
Sunshine State Conference action Saturday. The win was head coach
Glenn Wilkes, Jr.'s 498th of his career.
Rollins improves to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in SSC play and have
now won 19 of their last 20 regular season games, dating back to
last season. Saint Leo falls to 7-4 and 0-2 in the SSC with the
loss.
Forwards Brittainy Daiger, 11-12 from the free-throw line, and
Ines Teuma, 13-14 from the stripe, each netted 17 points to lead
the Tars with Teuma's mark setting a new career high. Kourtnie
Berry added 12 points off the bench while Paris Moore and Jasmine
Bradley each tallied nine.
Dominique Daniels scored 16 points and added eight rebounds to
pace the Lions while Laruen Lee poured in 14.
Rollins shot just 15-of-43 (35 percent) from the field, but made
good on 50-of-61 (82 percent) from the charity stripe. The Lions
shot 20-of-64 from the floor and 29-of-34 (83 percent) from the
line. The Tars earned a slight edge on the boards, 43-40 and
committed 22 turnovers to 19 by the Lions.
The game was tight through the first 10 minutes of the first
half with a Melissa Guerero jumper knotting the score at 18. No
team would hold more than a four point lead until the Tars ended
the period on a 9-0 run to take a 41-32 lead into the break.
Rollins' advantage ballooned to 15 at 59-44, as Jessica Barker
was fouled on a put-back and hit a free throw with 10:09 to go. The
Tars held the same lead until Saint Leo started to hit from the
stripe and cut the advantage to six with 90 seconds to go. As they
had the entire game, Rollins connected from the stripe and held on
for the win.
Rollins again be on the road for their next game, traveling to
Florida Tech on Wednesday, January 7 at 5:30 p.m. Fans can catch
