LAKELAND, Fla. (April 18, 2008) - The
10th-ranked Barry University women's tennis team upended the
7th-ranked Rollins women's tennis team 5-4 on Friday afternoon at
the Beerman Tennis Complex. The Tars overall record now stands at
21-2 overall while the Bucs improve to 17-6.
The Tars were up 2-1 after doubles play as No. 12 Marnie Mahler
and Roshni Luthra defeated No. 8 Ildiko Csordas and Caroline
Stevens 8-2 in the No. 1, and Sonia Bernal and Margaret Junker won
their match at No. 2 against Helen Wisiewski and Angie Werschel
8-4. Olivia Lilien and Berit Peterson rallied past Silvia Frandji
and Anastasiya Shevchenko 8-4 in the third position.
In singles action, Mahler fell in straight sets to No. 14
Csordas 6-4, 6-4 in the top spot, as No. 26 Stevens outlasted
Bernal 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2. Luthra and Junker won their
matches in straight sets as Luthra defeated Wisniewski 6-1, 6-1 in
the No. 4 and Junker rolled past Peterson 6-3, 6-2. Lilien evened
the match at 4-4 with her win over Frandji 6-4, 6-1 in the sixth
seed. In the deciding match, Shevchenko fell to No. 35 Werschel
7-6, 6-4 in the No. 3.
The Tars will be back in action on Saturday, April 19 when they
play for the third place slot against the loser of the Nova
Southeastern/Lynn match at 9:00 a.m.
