FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (April 11, 2008) ' Senior
third baseman Gene Howard hit two solo homeruns, but the Rollins
baseball team fell short at Nova Southeastern on Friday night,
falling 9-6 in a Sunshine State Conference series opener.' The Tars
fell to 23-16-1 overall and 4-8 in SSC play, while NSU improved to
23-15, 7-4.
Howard led Rollins at the plate, hitting 3-5 with three runs and
two RBI.' Senior left fielder Mike Crane also had a productive,
going 2-4 with a double, one run, and one RBI.
Nova Southeastern got to Rollins freshman starter Matt White
early, scoring five runs on eight hits and one walk through his
two-plus innings.' Junior right-hander Marty Cornish came out of
the bullpen and shut down the Sharks through the sixth, allowing
just one run a solo homerun to first baseman Bryan Cook in the
fifth.'
Cornish then gave up a two-out seeing-eye single to Cook in the
seventh with the score tied at six, leading to the eventual
go-ahead run and handing Cornish (2-1) the unfortunate loss.'
Cornish struck out four and walked one in his four and two thirds
innings with three runs allowed.
Cook was a triple away from the cycle for the Sharks, hitting
4-5 with a double, homerun, three runs, and three RBI.' Zachary
North (3-2) picked up the win out of the bullpen for NSU, and
closer Nick Carris pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his
eighth save.
Rollins and Nova Southeastern will clash again on Saturday,
April 12 with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. to finish the
