WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 8, 2008) ' In a 2-1
win over Georgetown at Alfond Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the
Rollins baseball team won the 60th Annual Rollins College Baseball
Week Championship.' The Tars earned a share of the title for the
22nd time in the tournament's history, and the win improved the
team to 16-6-1 overall.' The Hoyas fell to 5-6 with the loss.
Tournament Most Outstanding Player Bryan Bennett drove in both
runs for the Tars in the tight game.' Sophomore shortstop Ryan
Luker singled in the first, advanced to second on a single by
senior third baseman Gene Howard, went to third when senior left
fielder Mike Crane was hit by a pitch, and scored from third on
Bennett's sacrifice fly.' The Tars held on to the 1-0 lead through
the sixth inning when Howard walked and Crane followed with a
double.' Bennett then hit into a groundout, bringing Howard in from
third while Crane was caught in a rundown between second and
third.
Sophomore Marc Hewett dazzled in his start, allowing just one
Georgetown run through eight innings.' The Hoyas rallied in the
seventh, as left fielder Matt Harrigan doubled with one out,
advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by
first baseman Dan Capeless.' Hewett got out of a jam in the eighth,
and sophomore right-hander Robbie Pagano came out of the bullpen in
the ninth for his second save of the year.' Hewett (4-1) earned the
win and a spot on the All-Tournament Team, lasting eight innings
with six strikeouts, no walks, and just one run on six hits.
Michael Gaggioli (0-1) pitched well for the Hoyas in his season
debut, lasting seven innings with two runs on seven hits, one walk,
and five strikeouts, but the left-hander was credited with the
loss.' Daniel Kennedy pitched the final inning for Georgetown,
giving up two hits but not allowing a run.
Fellow Tars Mario Lombardo and Corey Whiting earned spots on the
All-Tournament team alongside Bennett and Hewett.' Bennett led
Rollins in the tournament from the designated hitter position,
hitting .556 with two homeruns, five runs, and 11 RBI through
the'seven games.' Whiting batted .444 with two homeruns, 10 runs,
11 RBI, and six stolen bases.' Lombardo shined in his single
appearance, striking out 11 through six and two thirds innings
while giving up one earned run in the win.' Hewett had two
appearances in the tournament, going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and eight
strikeouts through 10 innings.
After a two-day break, Rollins will be back in action hosting
American International on Tuesday, March 11 at 3:00 p.m.' Fans can
