LAKELAND, Fla. (March 20, 2008) ' For the first
time in the program's history, the Rollins softball team took all
three games of the series from the Florida Southern Moccasins. The
Tars won the opening game of the doubleheader 8-7 in nine innings
and were victorious in the second game 2-1 in another nine inning
contest.
Sunshine State Player of the Week Sherri Rabenold led the Tars
going 4-9 with one double, one triple and one RBI. In the batter's
box, Ingrid Schumacher went 3-9 with three RBI and her first stolen
base, while Christine Roser went 2-6 with one double and one RBI.
Lauren Starcher had a 3-8 outing with two doubles and one RBI.
Nicole Anderson picked up the game one win striking out 10 and
walking five. Schumacher had a big night in the circle pitching
nine innings giving up only one run on four hits and striking out
four.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Tars had a big first
inning scoring four of their eventual eight runs with hits by
Roser, Schumacher and Rachael Foster. Rollins notched one more run
in the second as Missy Thogmartin scored on a wild pitch. The Tars
tallied their sixth run by a Lauren Starcher single to left field,
scoring Monica Meadows. A Rabenold double in the fifth inning sent
Meghan Shaw home and gave Rollins a 7-5 lead over the Mocs.
Florida Southern tied up game one in the 7th-inning with a
two-run homerun by Powell to send the game to extra innings.
Starcher led things off in the Rollins 9th with a double to left
field. She would then score on a wild pitch to win the first game
for the Tars 8-7.
In Game Two, Florida Southern's Lovestrand singled up the middle
to start off the first inning. One run would walk in to give the
Mocs a 1-0 lead. The Tars would tie it up in the sixth as Rabenold
would single to third base and eventually end up on third base by
errors. She would score on a throwing error by Minton. Rollins
would take the series in the ninth inning as Roser doubled to left
field to begin the inning, followed by Schumacher singling to right
field to bring Roser home, 2-1. The Mocs would not recover in their
portion of the ninth and Rollins would go on to win the
contest.
The Tars (18-9, 3-3) will be back in action tomorrow, March 21
when they travel to Clermont to play St. Michael's. First pitch is
slated for 5:00 p.m.
