WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 24, 2008) ' The
Rollins baseball team won its 10th game in a row and swept its
third straight series in a 7-4 win over Bentley on Sunday afternoon
at Alfond Stadium.' The Tars remained unbeaten at home (9-0) and
improved to 10-2 overall, while the Falcons finished their trip to
Florida at 0-7.
Bentley scored one run off Rollins starter Matt White after
three singles in the top of the first, but the Tars tied the game
at one with an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Ryan Luker in the
bottom of the inning.' Rollins took its first lead in the third on
an RBI single by senior left fielder Mike Crane, and they started
to pour on with four more in the fourth and one in the fifth.' The
first two runs came in on a two-run triple by senior center fielder
Corey Whiting, and senior second baseman Gary Martoccio brought
Whiting home on a single through the right side.' Martoccio stole
second, advanced to third on a single by senior third baseman Gene
Howard, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Luker.' Sophomore Phil
Hendricks brought in the final run for the Tars on a solo homerun
off Bentley reliever Ricardo Sullivan in the fifth.
The Falcons, looking for their first win of the year, fought
back into the game in the seventh.' A single and two walks by White
loaded the bases, and freshman reliever Steven Ortman entered the
game for the Tars.' Bentley designated hitter James Roche drew a
walk to bring in the first run, and Ortman allowed one more to
score on a wild pitch.' The Falcons narrowed the Rollins lead to
three on an RBI single by pinch hitter Garrett Stenhouse off
reliever Michael Eppich.' Sophomore left-hander Bobby Coster
entered the game for the Tars and pitched a scoreless ninth inning
for his second save of the year.
White (3-0) picked up his third straight win, allowing three
runs through six and two thirds innings.' Bentley's Jarrod Marchesi
(0-1) was credited with the loss after allowing six runs, five
earned, through five innings.' Sullivan finished the game for the
Falcons, allowing one run through four innings.
Howard led the Rollins lineup with three hits, picking up his
team-leading seventh multi-hit game.' Luker went 2-3 with two RBI,
and he extended his hitting streak to 12 games.' Hendricks also had
a good day at the plate, hitting 2-4 with a homerun and double.
The Tars will go on the road for a non-conference game against
Sunshine State Conference rival Tampa, the two-time defending NCAA
national champion, on Tuesday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m.' Fans can
