TAMPA, Fla.(October 4,2008)- The Rollins Tars
soccer team was unable to upset No. 9 Tampa, Saturday evening as
they lost a closely contested match, 2-0 at Pepin Stadium.
The Tars and Spartans battled 86 minutes of scoreless soccer before
Tampa was able to score the game-winning goal, forward Mike
Bethel.
The Tars attacked the Spartans all game long, but could not put the
pall between the pipes. Rollins outshot the Spartans 16 to eight.
The Tars looked to even the attack as Tampa went a man down late in
the first half. Ryan Maxwell drew a red card after he hit Simon
Jensen in the face. Rollins played the entire second half with the
man advantage.
The second half saw more of the same type of back-and-forth play.
Each side struggled to mount any serious attacks against the
keepers. It was not until the 86th minute that the Spartans cracked
the scoreboard with Bethel placing a shot just past the reach of
Rollins goalkeeper Aaron Rokeach with an assist from Pascal Milien.
Less than a minute later, it was Milien scoring the second goal by
beating Rokeach on a breakaway.
The Tars falls to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in Sunshine State Conference
play, while the Spartans improve to 7-2-1 and 2-2 in conference
action .
The Tars return to action when they welcome the Saint Leo Lions,
Saturday, Oct. 10 at Barker Family Stadium.
