WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 31, 2008)
There were no tricks, but plenty of treats for the eighth-ranked
Rollins women's soccer team Friday evening as they trounced
Sunshine State Conference leader and No. 23 Florida Southern by a
score of 5-1. The Tars remain undefeated with a record of 13-0-3,
6-0-1 in conference action, while the Moccasins suffer their first
conference loss of the season and drop to a record of 13-4-0, 7-1-0
in SSC play.
Sophomore standout Chelsea
Brady led the way for the Tars on the night, walking away with
two goals and one assist. Two-time defending SSC Player of the
Year Lindsay
Giblin tallied the first goal of the night for both teams off
of a penalty kick, and sophomore duo Jessica
Deese and Leah
Hirsch both collected a goal apiece to round out the goal count
for the nationally ranked Tars. Freshman forward Georgia
Libert assisted on Brady's first goal of the evening to collect
her fourth of the season, and goalkeeper Michelle
Dillingham collected five saves and saw a total of 13 shots on
the night, allowing only one goal all contest.
Rollins took some time to get into the first half action, but
once they found their groove the Tars controlled the tempo and set
the pace of the game. The Tars led in shots 23-13, corner kicks
4-3, and shots on goal 14-6, silencing the conference leader
throughout the match.
Giblin got the ball rolling for the Tars after a Florida
Southern foul in the box during the 23 minute allowed for a Rollins
penalty kick. Giblin set-up and fired a ball into the left corner
to put the Tars up on the board, but the game was not over yet.
Brady notched her first goal of the evening by collecting on a
strong cross from Libert and one-touching the ball in between the
pipes to put Rollins up 2-0 at the half.
Florida Southern came out of the half with a vengeance, tallying
their only goal of the evening in the 46 minute as Erin Hopkins
found her mark on a Jackie Bachteler free kick to head the ball
into the right corner past Dillingham. Both teams would be evenly
matched in the following minutes, but with Deese's goal from an
assist off of Brady in the 56 minute, the Tars would carry the
building momentum throughout the remainder of the contest.
Hirsch tallied the following goal with a hard strike from 30
yards out past the Mocs goalkeeper Martina Tangen Billing to put
the Tars up 4-1 in the 70 minute, and with a late score from Brady
in the 84 minute, the Tars would spend the remainder of the contest
putting on the offensive pressure and holding the Mocs to the
midfield with a solid defensive back line.
The Rollins women's soccer team will be back on their home turf
on Sunday, November 2 when they take to the pitch in a rescheduled
bout against Saint Leo University. The contest marks the last
regular season game for both teams, and will be vital in
determining whether or not the Tars will pick up their first
regular season championship title in program history. Rollins
needs to walk away with a win on Sunday in order to reach first
place standing within the conference, a loss or a draw will mean
the difference in a second or third place finish. Kickoff against
the Lions is set for 6:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. Fans will be
able to catch all of the action live on the Citizen's Bank of
Florida Tars Sports Network at www.RollinsSports.com.
