Tars Overpower Buccaneers In First Round Of Regional Play

BOCA RATON, Fla. (May 4, 2007) ' The Rollins women's tennis team won their top four singles matches and No. 1 doubles bout as they defeated Barry 5-4 on Friday afternoon at the McCusker Complex.

Ninth ranked Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler ran by No. 11 Iidik Csordas and Berit Peterson 8-5. Barry took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches 8-3 and 8-4 respectively.

No. 7 Purcell dominated Csordas 6-1, 6-2 in the top slot, while Mahler blew past Helen Wisniewski 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2. Sonia Bernal won her match against Berit Peterson 6-3, 6-4 in the third seed, and Anastasiya Shevchenko came out on top against Saskia Kruse 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 in the No. 4. The Buccaneers had to straight set victories in the fifth and sixth position as Laime Contreras defeated Silvia Frandji 6-2, 6-0, and Svetlana Konyashkiva defeated Mai-Han Nguyen 6-0, 6-1.

Rollins (22-4) will take on the Lynn University Fighting Knights in the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship at 10:00 a.m.
