WALTHAM, Mass. (May 10, 2007) - A four-run
comeback in the top of the ninth put the Rollins baseball team up
by one in its final game of the season, but the Tars bullpen could
not hold the lead, allowing Bentley to win 6-5 on a two-run single
in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday afternoon at DeFelice
Field.' Rollins finished the 2007 season with an overall record of
26-30, and Bentley improved to 22-29.
Sophomore first baseman Ryan Maddern went 2-4 for the Tars,
scoring one run and driving in two with a double.' Freshman right
fielder Phil Hendricks also performed well at the plate, hitting
1-2 with a walk and one RBI.' In the field Hendricks cut down a
runner at the plate trying to score from second base on a single.'
Three freshmen appeared on the mound for Rollins, and right-handed
starter Marc Hewett allowed three runs in three and two thirds
innings.' Left-hander Danny Clark performed well out of the
bullpen, not allowing a hit through his first four and one third
innings, but he allowed the runners to reach in the ninth that
would eventually come around to score the runs that tied and won
the game.' Clark (2-4) was credited with the loss, and right-hander
Robbie Pagano entered the game and surrendered the game-winning
two-run single by Bentley shortstop Steve Gath.
Left fielder Kevin Vona paced the Falcons lineup, hitting 3-5
with one RBI.' Third baseman Tim Denehy, Gath, and second baseman
Charlie Pagliarulo also had two hits apiece.' Reliever Jarrod
Marchesi lasted seven and two thirds innings, giving up four runs,
two of which were earned.' Matt Boudrow (4-3) relieved Marchesi and
picked up the win, pitching one scoreless inning.
Bentley led 3-1 entering the ninth inning, and Rollins started a
rally when junior third baseman Stefano Foggi was hit by a pitch to
lead off the inning.' Sophomore catcher Eugene Martinez then hit a
ground rule double, advancing runners to second and third.' One run
scored when freshman shortstop Ryan Luker reached base on an error,
and two more came in on a double by Maddern.' Senior second baseman
Ryan McKenzie brought home the fourth run on a sacrifice fly.' With
the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the inning, Gath
bounced one up the middle off Pagano to win the game for the
Falcons.
