TAMPA, Fla. (April 19, 2007) ' The Barry
Buccaneers'avenged their previous loss to the No. 15 Tars by
defeating Rollins 5-2 in the first round of the SSC Tournament held
at the Hillsborough Community College Tennis Complex.
The No. 3 doubles team of Anastasiya Shevchenko and Silvia
Frandji won the Tars only doubles bout on the afternoon by
defeating Svetlana Konyashkina and Helen Wisniewski 9-8. Tasi
Purcell and Marnie Mahler lost their second match of the season as
they fell to Ildiko Csordas and Berit Peterson 8-5 in the top seed,
while Sonia Bernal and Mai-Han Nguyen also suffered a tough loss
against Laime Contreras and Saskia Kruse 8-5 in the No. 2 spot.
No. 2 seed Mahler was the only Tar to win a match in the singles
session when she defeated Wisniewski 6-1, 6-2. Csordas handed
Purcell her second loss of the season as she overpowered her in
straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 position. No. 4 Shevchenko and
No .6 Nguyen went down against Kruse and Konyashkina respectively,
while both Bernal and Frandji's matches went unfinished on the
afternoon.
The Tars (19-4) will play in the SSC Championship back draw on
April 20 at 2:00 p.m.
