WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 23, 2007) ' In their
second Division I match-up of the season, the Rollins women's
tennis team routed the Memphis Tigers 8-1 on Friday afternoon at
the Martin Complex. The Tars (13-1) are now riding an eight match
winning streak.
Rollins took two of three doubles matches, falling at the No. 2
spot. The top ranked team of Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler
overcame Margorie Ondeck and Dara Toulch 8-6 in the No. 1. Sonia
Bernal and Allison Arof suffered their fourth loss as a team
falling to Ekin Zafir and Christian Wieser 8-3 in the second slot.
The Tars bounced back as Anastasiya Shevchenko and Silvia Frandji
blanked Katie-Mary Outhwaite and Flavia Russo 8-0 in the No. 3.
The 20th ranked Tars swept all six singles matches without
dropping a set to the Tigers. Purcell's opponent, Ondeck, retired
with injury early on in the first set with Purcell leading 4-0. The
No. 2 Mahler notched a practically uncontested win over Toulch 6-2,
6-0, as third seed Bernal overwhelmed Zafir 6-2, 6-3. Shevchenko
played a tight match against Wieser, but ended up on top 6-4, 7-5
in the fourth match. No. 5 Frandji won her sixth match of the
season, downing Russo 6-2, 6-0, and Mai-Han Nguyen took out
Outhwaite 7-5, 6-1 in the sixth position.
The Tars will be back in action on Sunday, March 25, as they
travel to Miami Shores to take on conference rival Barry Buccaneers
(5-3, 3-2) at 11:00 a.m.
