Rollins Splits Doubleheader with Eckerd, Wins Series

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 10, 2007) ' The Rollins baseball team split a doubleheader against Sunshine State Conference opponent Eckerd College on Saturday at Alfond Stadium, winning Game One 8-3 and dropping Game Two 9-5.' The Tars came away with the series win and now stand at 13-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play, and Eckerd now sports a record of 6-8, 1-2.

Rollins starter David Nathanson (5-0) went the distance in Game One and picked up his fifth win, striking out eight and allowing just one earned run in his first complete game of the year.' The senior right-hander surrendered just seven hits and one walk in nine innings of work.' Junior left fielder Mike Crane and sophomore catcher Eugene Martinez did the most damage for the Tars, as Crane went 2-5 with two RBI and Martinez went 3-4 with a double, two runs, and two RBI.' Eckerd starter Phil Weylie (0-2) allowed four runs in one plus innings on his way to the loss.' Designated hitter Alfredo Cabale had the only RBI for the Tritons, driving in a run on a groundout in the fourth.

Game Two was close through the first four innings, but Eckerd broke out with six-run fifth inning, giving them a six-run cushion.' Rollins starter Marc Hewett (1-2) was credited with the loss, giving up seven runs, just one of which was earned, in four and two thirds innings.' Junior first baseman Stefano Foggi was a bright spot for the Tars, crushing a two-run homerun well over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth.' Crane and freshman second baseman Ryan Luker also drove in runs for Rollins.' Right-hander Joe Sinicola (3-3) picked up the complete game win for Eckerd, allowing five runs through seven innings.' The Tritons lineup was led by shortstop Matt Heller (3-4, one run), center fielder Derek Makowski (1-4, homerun, three RBI), and designated hitter Steve Skrinar (2-3, two RBI).
