WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 19, 2007) ' The
Rollins baseball team completed a series sweep over non-conference
opponent Bryant University in a 9-3 victory at Alfond Stadium on
Monday afternoon.' The Tars won their third straight and now stand
at 7-4 overall, and the Bulldogs dropped to 0-6.
Junior designated hitter Mike Crane had a career night for
Rollins, going 5-5 with five singles, three runs, and one RBI.'
Combined with his game-winning RBI single the night before, Crane
now has hits in six consecutive at bats.' Also helping the Tars'
scoring efforts were freshman rightfielder Phil Hendricks (2-5, one
run, two RBI), sophomore leftfielder Jesse More (2-5, one run, one
RBI), and junior centerfielder Corey Whiting (3-5, one run).' More
entered the game leading the Sunshine State Conference in batting
average at .550, and he now stands at .520 after another fine
performance at the plate.' Freshman right-hander Marc Hewett (1-1)
pitched eight strong innings for the Tars, striking out four while
surrendering three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks, on
his way to his first career win.
Right fielder Mark Dondero went 2-4 with one RBI to lead Bryant
offensively.' Ben Conn (0-1) got the start for the Bulldogs, and he
was credited with the loss after allowing five runs, four earned,
on eight hits and one walk in two and one third innings.
Rollins put five runs on the board in the third inning, jumping
out to a 5-1 lead.' Third baseman Gary Martoccio started the rally
with a triple over the center fielder's head, and he scored on
first baseman Gene Howard's single up the middle.' Crane followed
with another single, and Hendricks knocked one out to right center
for the third single in the row, scoring Howard from second.' The
streak continued as More knocked one through the second base hole
and he was followed by sophomore catcher Jason Cutlip, driving in
two runs with a single to center field.' Freshman second baseman
Ryan Luker capped off the rally with a sacrifice fly to right
field, scoring More from third.
The Tars will be back in action on Friday, February 23 at 7:00
p.m. for the first game of a weekend series against Bentley College
at Alfond Stadium.
