WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 10, 2007) ' The
Rollins baseball team pounded NAIA opponent St. Thomas 12-5 in Game
One of Saturday's doubleheader at Alfond Stadium, but the Bobcats
returned the favor in Game Two, with Hector Nelo (1-0) hurling a
seven-inning no-hitter against the Tars in a 12-0 victory.' Rollins
now stands at 4-3 overall, and St. Thomas leaves with a record of
3-2.
Rollins' Game One starter Jon Wano (2-0) lasted seven innings
and gave up two runs on his way to the win.' The senior
right-hander surrendered 10 hits and one walk while striking out
four.' Hitting was contagious for the Tars in Game One, as every
starting position player had a hit except designated hitter Mike
Crane, and Crane walked three times and scored two runs.' The
production was balanced throughout the lineup, with senior third
baseman Gene Howard, freshman shortstop Ryan Luker, sophomore
catcher Anthony Soto, and junior centerfielder Corey Whiting all
driving in two runs apiece.' Soto doubled three times, and he was
also one of five Tars to score two runs.
St. Thomas' Game One starter Michel Medina gave up seven runs,
six earned, on eight hits and five walks in four innings of work.'
Jose Garcia took over and finished the game for the Bobcats,
allowing five runs on six hits and two walks in his four innings.'
Shortstop Alex Pascual got the St. Thomas lineup going from the
leadoff spot, knocking out two hits with one run scored and one
RBI.' Centerfielder Jason Houser had three hits, and designated
hitter Henry Roque had two hits and two runs scored.
Nelo dominated the Tars in Game Two, allowing no hits to go
along with his five walks, and it marked the first time Rollins had
been no-hit since March 27, 2004 in the Tars' 2-1 loss at Eckerd.'
Leadoff man Gary Martoccio was able to reach base all three times
against Nelo, twice by walk and once by a hit by pitch, but the
Tars were not able to drive him home.' The three-four-five hitters
in the St. Thomas lineup were the undoing for the Tars' pitching
staff, as rightfielder Angel Hernandez, leftfielder Juan Santana,
and first baseman Aliercy Nunez combined to hit 9-11 with eight
runs and eight RBI.' Howard (0-2) lasted only one and one third
innings in the loss, and sophomore Michael Eppich could not provide
much relief, allowing four runs in his two innings out of the
bullpen.' The trio of sophomore Mark Jigarjian and freshmen Chad
Giannuzzi and Robbie Pagano allowed just one hit over the final
three and one third innings for the Tars.
Rollins will go on the road for the first time this season for a
non-conference game against Sunshine State Conference rival Florida
Southern.' The game will be broadcast live on the Tars Sports
Network at www.RollinsSports.com.
