WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 30, 2007) '' In a
first round Sunshine State Conference Tournament battle, the
Rollins women's soccer team was able to overcome a strong Florida
Southern squad to reach a 1-0 victory and move on to the
semifinals.' The Tars improved to 10-7-1 overall, while the
Moccasins fell to 12-7-1.
With both teams equally matched, play seemed to be at a
stalemate for the majority of the first half.' Things really got
turned up 31 minutes into the game with a shot by Rollins
midfielder Leah Hirsch that deflected hard off of the crossbar.'
Hirsch's shot was immediately returned with a wide left shot by
freshman forward Chelsea Brady.' Going into halftime, Rollins led
the shot tally 5-4.
The game picked-up in second half play, with Rollins taking
advantage of halftime to devise a new strategy and come out
strong.' Rollins capitalized on every chance they could get down in
the offensive end, and finished the game with a total of 12 shots
in the second half to Florida Southern's four.' Junior forward
Lindsay Giblin scored the game-winner, her team-leading 11th goal,
in the 81st minute.' With a pass from sophomore Joy Powell, Giblin
was able to dribble into the box and shoot through the arms of the
Moccasins goalkeeper for the game's lone goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Stina Lykke Petersen stopped three shots for
the Tars in her fourth shutout of the year.' Sarah Furr tallied
three saves for the Moccasins.' The Tars finished the game with a
shot advantage of 17-8, and physical play by both teams led to a
combined 36 total fouls.
The Tars will go on the road for the semifinals of the SSC
Tournament on Friday, November 2, and they will battle the regular
season champion and tournament host Tampa at 7:00 p.m.' Fans can
