Tars Knock Off Montevallo

WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 3, 2006) ' The Rollins men's soccer team, ranked 25th in the nation in the preseason NCAA Division II poll, defeated University of Montevallo, ranked 18th, with a score of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Barker Family Stadium.

The win continued the Tars' undefeated start to the season and upped their record to 4-0 overall.' Montevallo now has dropped their second match to Sunshine Conference opponents, losing on August 24 to third ranked Lynn University 4-1 and today to Rollins.' The Falcons now stand at 2-2 overall.

Scoring for Rollins were Chris Cerroni (seventh this season), Jon Gruenewald (fourth), and Juan Kusnir (second).' Cerroni, Christopher Chafin, and Leslie Osei assisted on the three goals.' The one goal and one assist brought Cerroni's team-leading point total to 15 on the year.' Gruenewald and Kusnir upped their point totals to nine and five respectively with their goals.' Osei's assist gave him a team-leading six for the season.

The first half of play was relatively quiet.' Montevallo fired off six shots and Rollins five, but the teams combined for only three shots on goal in the half.' The Falcons did have plenty of opportunities with five corner kicks in the half.' The Tars took over the game in the second half with goals in the 64th (Cerroni), 68th (Gruenewald), and 85th (Kusnir) minutes.' Rollins out shot Montevallo 16 to four in the second half and had eight corner kicks compared to just two for the Falcons.

Melford James Jr. saved nine shots for Montevallo, and Frazer Siddall had four saves for the Tars' shutout.' Jonathan Maloney led the Falcons with six shots and two shots on goal.' Cerroni attempted five shots, and Jacob Deloach and Kusnir attempted four apiece.' Montevallo finished the game with 21 fouls, and Rollins notched 16.' Each team was called for two yellow cards.

Rollins will go on its first road trip of the year when they travel to Pensacola for a game against West Florida on September 8 (7:30 p.m.).' The men will then go to Thomasville, Ga. on September 10 for a match against Thomas University (2:30 p.m.).' The Rollins women's team will join them for both games, playing the same opponents on the same days.'
