FORT
MYERS , Fla. (May 13, 2006) The Rollins baseball team finished
their season on a sour note on Saturday in Ft. Myers , falling to
the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 6-4.
Ryan
Williams came out of the bullpen for the Eagles to strike out 12
Tars over five innings. Rollins (28-27) struck out a season high 18
times as a team and left nine men on base.
'
Rollins took a big blow in the bottom of the first inning as they
lost their starting pitcher after only three batters. David
Nathanson took a line drive directly off of his right forearm after
pitching 0.2 of an inning, promptly ending his day. He suffered a
broken right wrist and was taken directly to a hospital following
the injury for further treatment. Jon Wano worked in relief of
Nathanson and struggled to keep the Tars in it. Wano gave up six
earned runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work.
'
The
Tars were led on the offensive end by freshman outfielder Jesse
More. More finished 3-5 with a double and two RBI. Kevin Schnacke
went 2-4 with a run scored. Brent Magnuson finished his collegiate
career with a 2-5 day, scoring a run and knocking in two runs on a
double. Jason Cutlip, Anthony Soto and Gene Howard also had hits
for the Tars.
'
Rollins got on the board first for the third straight game. Soto
led off the top of the second by reaching on the fourth error of
the series by Eagle shortstop Patrick Garrido. He advanced to third
on a single to left center by Kevin Schnacke, and then scored on a
RBI single by Brent Magnuson to put the Tars up 1-0. Jesse More
followed with a RBI single of his own to extend the lead to
2-0.
'
The
Eagles came back with two runs in the bottom of the second on three
straight two out hits against Jon Wano. But the Tars answered right
back in the top of the fourth. Jason Cutlip started a rally with a
double down the right field line. Magnuson and More followed with
two straight RBI doubles to lift the Tars back up 4-2.
'
But the
Eagles quickly erased the deficit in the bottom of the fourth and
took a lead of their own at 5-4 on a two run home run and a RBI
single. FGCU added another run on a solo home run in the bottom of
the fifth by Ian Manson to push the lead to 6-4 which would prove
to be enough.
