WINTER
PARK, Fla. (March 25, 2006) ' In a Saturday afternoon double header
in Winter Park, Fla. the Rollins College softball team took one of
two from the Saint Leo Lions, losing the first game 2-1 and
grabbing the second 1-0 in eight innings. The Tars improve to 30-8
on the season and 8-4 in Sunshine State Conference action while the
Lions stand at 21-13 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
'
The
pitchers for both teams ruled the day, as neither team was able to
put together a rally to grab an out-right lead. In game one,
Rollins took an early 1-0 lead as senior Kelly Cruz (Winter
Springs, Fla.) singled to center field scoring junior Stacy Sanders
(Orlando, Fla.) from second base. Cruz led the Tars in game one,
going 2-3 with one RBI. Sophomore Jennifer Olsen (Winter Haven,
Fla.) notched the other hit in the game for Rollins in the fifth,
but was left stranded on second base. The Lions scored their first
run of the game in the second, as Rollins pitcher Nicole Anderson
(Brandon, Fla.) hit Stasi Sattler with the bases loaded, scoring
Ally Maddox from third base. The Lions scored again in the fifth as
they opened the inning with a single and two doubles.
'
The
Lions would hold on to their 2-1 advantage and take game one as
Ashley Urbanik recorded the win and Katie Heintz the save. The two
combined to allow only three hits, one run, one walk and nine
strikeouts in seven innings of work. For Rollins, Anderson took the
loss, after going 4.1 innings, surrendering five hits, two runs,
one walk and striking out five. Sophomore Ingrid Schumacher
(Naples, Fla.) came on in the middle of the fifth and gave up one
hit and struck out two.
'
Game
two was a battle of the pitchers, as Heintz and Schumacher kept
their opponents in check. In the bottom of the eighth, the Tars put
together a run and scored the only run of the game, taking the 1-0
victory. After senior Kallie Jones (Chandler, Okla.) opened the
eighth inning with a groundout to the shortstop, Schumacher walked.
With junior Lauren Winney (Jacksonville, Fla.) pinch running for
Schumacher, she advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on
a bunt by junior Devon Kontos (Orlando, Fla.). Olsen then stepped
to the plate and sent a single to center field, scoring Winney and
ending the game.
'
Schumacher
went all eight innings for the Tars, allowing seven hits and three
walks while striking out seven for her tenth win of the season.
Heintz also went the distance giving up three hits and three walks
while striking out 14.
