MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (March 24, 2006)
The Rollins lineup was silenced Friday night in Miami Shores. The
Tars (17-11, 2-5) were shutout for the third time this season with
a brilliant performance by Bucs starter Jayson Brown. Rollins got
five hits on the game and left eight on base overall. Junior
starting pitcher David Nathanson pitched very well, but didn't get
the support to win.
The Tars were led offensively by junior third baseman Gene Howard.
Howard went 3-4 on the night with a double and two singles.
Freshman outfielder Tyler Hartman went 1-4 on the day. And junior
shortstop Ryan McKenzie had the only other Tar hit, he was 1-1 with
a walk.
David Nathanson had a quality outing on Friday and was still tagged
with the loss. Nathanson went eight innings for his first complete
game of the year. The junior gave up two earned runs on seven hits
while tying a season high with 10 strikeouts. Jayson Brown one
upped Nathanson as he threw his first shutout of the year. Brown
gave up five hits and walked two while striking out 11.
Rollins began the game by squandering a chance to kick off the
scoring in the first inning. Tyler Hartman singled with one out and
Gene Howard followed a batter later with a two out double. But both
were left on when Stefano Foggi struck out looking.
The Tars couldn't take advantage of another good opportunity to
score in the top of the third. Ryan McKenzie led the inning off
with a single through the right side. Martoccio followed with a sac
bunt that the pitcher couldn't handle. But Tyler Hartman struck out
trying to bunt the runners over, McKenzie was thrown out trying to
steal third, and Anthony Soto struck out to end the threat.
Barry got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning taking
advantage of the Tars second error of the game. Barry got a RBI
single from their catcher Nick Corbeil.
The Tars left two more on base in the top of the fifth inning when
McKenzie and Cutlip both reached base on errors with one out.
However the Bucs were able to get out of the inning with a ground
out by Martoccio and a strike-out of Hartman.
Barry made it 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo
home run to right field from the catcher Nick Corbeil.
Rollins got another great chance to score in the ninth inning. Gene
Howard led the inning off with a single up the middle, and Kevin
Schnacke followed one batter later with a walk. But the Tars
couldn't get it done as they followed with two straight strike-outs
to end the game. Barry would take the game 2-0. The two teams will
return to action Saturday March 25 for a double header. First pitch
is scheduled for noon.
