WINTER PARK , Fla. (March 16, 2006) The Rollins bats were alive and
well in Alfond Stadium on Thursday night. The Tars (14-9) smacked
out two home-runs and came back to beat the Bentley Falcons, 8-6.
Rollins put up eight runs and 12 hits on the Falcon pitching staff
and got some great middle relief work to come up with the
victory.
'
The
Tars were led offensively by freshman designated hitter, Anthony
Soto. Soto went 3-4 on the night with a season best 4 RBI, and his
second homer on the season. Sophomore Gary Martoccio made a big
impact at the top of the Tars line-up. The second baseman went 1-4
on the night with a run scored, two RBI, and his team leading third
homer of the season. Freshman Tyler Hartman and junior Gene Howard
each had a good night at the plate going 2-4 with two runs apiece.
Howard also knocked in two runs.
'
The
Falcons were led by shortstop Steve Gath who went 3-5 on the night
with a run scored.
'
The
Tars got a great effort from their bullpen which kept them in the
game after starter, John Masklee was lifted in the fifth inning.
Freshman Michael Eppich and junior Jonathan Wano combined to go 4.1
innings giving up no runs on four hits. The two relievers kept the
Falcon bats at bay and allowed the Tars to regain the lead.
'
The
Tars got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Hartman
got a one out single, and Howard followed it up with a RBI double
to left center. Howard would later score on a RBI single up the
middle by Anthony Soto. Bentley answered the Tars with four runs in
the bottom of the inning on four hits and a Rollins error. The Tars
then got three more runs in the bottom of the third. Tyler Hartman
started the inning with a lead-off double. Howard drove the next
pitch through the right side of the infield for an RBI. Anthony
Soto crushed a two run homer two batters later to put the Tars up
5-4. Bentley regained the lead with a run in the fourth and the
fifth. But the Tars bats responded once again with two runs in the
sixth on a two run shot by Gary Martoccio to right center. Rollins
would add an insurance run in the seventh and Jon Wano would shut
the door on the Falcon rally in the eighth and ninth for his third
save on the year.
'
Michael Eppich got his team leading fourth victory for his 2.1
scoreless innings pitched. Wano recorded his team leading third
save on the season.
'
The Tars will be back in
action on Friday when they travel to St. Petersburg to battle SSC
foe, Eckerd College . The two teams will play Friday night at 7pm
and will follow it up on Saturday with a double-header beginning at
1 pm.
