WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 15, 2006) ' The Rollins women's
tennis team rolled to a sweep in doubles play and took the top
three singles matches as the Tars defeated Long Island University
7-2 on Wednesday. The victory improves Rollins to 9-5 on the year
while the Blackbirds fall to 5-5.

After falling in their first three matches of the season, Tasi
Purcell and Marnie Mahler made it eight wins in a row from the No.
1 double position as they defeated Merve Koksal and Krystina
Bachner 8-2. Anastasiya Shevchenko and Silvia Frandji were easy
winners in the No. 2 slot as they took Amy Hosotsuji and Jessica
Loose 8-0. Sonia Bernal and Melanie Beck teamed for the first time
this season and came out on top in the No. 3 doubles match,
defeating Claudia Arteaga and Ashley Harvey 8-6.

Rollins quickly put the match away as they took four of the six
singles matches with three winning in straight sets. Purcell won
her sixth match in a row, downing Loose 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot.
Mahler took the No. 2 match over Koksal 6-2, 6-1 with Frandji
winning the No. 5 match 6-2, 6-2 over Hosotsuji. Bernal took a
while to get going in the No. 3 position as she dropped the first
set 0-6, but bounced back for 6-2 and 6-4 victories for a Rollins
win.

Harvey defeated Shevchenko 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 match and Arteaga
took Beck 3-6, 6-0, 11-9 in the No. 6 position for Long Island.

Rollins returns to action on Tuesday, March 21 as they will host
Jacksonville State at 3:30 p.m.
