BABSON PARK , Fla. (February 28, 2006) The Rollins College baseball
team came off of a week long break to defeat Webber International
on the road 6-2. The Tars (10-5) got six quality innings from
starter Jonathan Wano, and took advantage of three Warrior (13-7)
errors. The Tars out-hit the Warriors 11-10, and three Rollins
pitchers combined to strike out eight Webber batters.
'
The
Tars bats were alive and well Tuesday night. Freshman left fielder,
Anthony Soto, led the way, going 3-4 with three runs scored and a
RBI double. Sophomore second baseman and leadoff man, Gary
Martoccio, was 3-4 and reached base four times. Sophomore first
baseman Steffano Foggi also had a nice night at the plate as he
went 2-4 with a RBI double.
'
Junior starter Jonathan Wano went six solid innings striking out
six and giving up two unearned runs on eight hits. Senior closer
Rob Cloar wiggled his way out of jams in the eighth and ninth for
his second save on the season.
'
The
Tars got the scoring started in the second. Soto opened up the
inning with a lead-off double and would later score on a Warrior
throwing error. Rollins added two more unearned runs in the third
on two more Warrior errors. Webber tried to get back in it with a
run in the fifth and the sixth. But the Tars put it away when they
added an insurance run with Foggi doubling off of the first baseman
scoring Soto.
'
Closer Rob Cloar came on the in the eighth inning with two men on
and no one out. He would give up a single but follow it up by
striking the next two batters out and forcing a fly out to end the
inning. In the ninth, Cloar loaded the bases once again. But the
veteran fireballer once again got out of the jam without allowing a
run.
