Tar Dominate Doubles to Down Florida Tech

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 23, 2006) ' The Tars cruised through doubles and had just two singles matches end in super tiebreakers as the Rollins women's tennis team recorded their second straight shutout, this time a 9-0 decision over Florida Tech. Rollins improves to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play while Tech falls to 2-3, 1-1. '

The seventh ranked doubles tandem of Tasi Purcell and Marnie Mahler downed Belen Pandre and Michaela Horvathova 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles match with Sonia Bernal and Anastasiya Shevchenko taking Nicole David and Viktorija Bredelyte in the No. 2 match, also by a score of 8-1. Silvia Frandji and Cassie Webster scored a shutout, beating Stephanie Monaco and Kimoya Tucker 8-0 in the No. 3 position.

Mahler, the 42 nd ranked player in the nation, moved to No. 1 singles for the first time this season and defeated Horvathova 6-2, 6-1. Frandji downed Bredelyte 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 4 match with Webster taking Monaco 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 match. Newcomer Melanie Beck, playing in her first match of the year, blanked Rohrbach 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles position.

The No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches each went to super tiebreakers with the Tars coming out on top in both. Shevchenko defeated Pandre 3-6, 6-3 (10-7) at No. 2 with Bernal winning the No. 3 match 6-2, 4-6 (10-0) over David.

Rollins returns to action on Saturday, February 25 with a trip to Sunshine State Conference foe Nova Southeastern. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. They will then travel to the University of Tampa on Sunday, February 26 for an 11 a.m. match-up.
