WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 22,
2006) ' The Rollins women's
basketball team moved one step closer to a perfect season on
Wednesday as the Tars downed rival Florida Southern 59-42 on senior
night. The victory improves Rollins, who has already wrapped up the
Sunshine State Conference title, to 25-0 overall and 15-0 in
conference play while the Moccasins fall to 8-18, 4-11.
'
The
inside game of senior Joslyn Giles and the perimeter play of
sophomore Jen Musgrove led Rollins as each had stellar nights.
Giles netted 18 points behind an 8-11 mark from the free throw
line, while Musgrove recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12
rebounds. Senior Sally Johnston added nine points and nine
rebounds.
'
Willamina
Folks and Meghana Saoji who scored eight and seven points,
respectively, paced Florida Southern while Christina Wright led
with eight rebounds.
'
The
stingy Tars defense held the Mocs to just 23.8 percent (15-63)
shooting from the field, allowing Rollins to overcome an off night
on offense as they connected on just 27 percent (13-48). Rollins
owned a huge advantage on the boards, out-rebounding Florida
Southern 54-36.
'
It
was a very slow pace to begin the game as Rollins took an 8-0
advantage over the first six minutes. FSC then heated up and out
scored the Tars 20-10 over the next 10 minutes to take a two point
advantage. A pair of Giles free throws sparked a 5-0 Rollins run
only to have the Mocs fight back with the long ball, pulling to
within one at 27-26. Musgrove then connected on a lay-up and
drained a free throw with no time on the clock to send Rollins into
intermission with a 32-28 lead.
'
Florida
Southern got to within two at 34-32 with 15:58 left, but Johnston
netted a trey on the Tars next trip down the floor to start an 11-2
Tars run over the next 10 minutes that put the game away for
Rollins.
'
The
Tars return to action on Saturday, February 25 at Nova Southeastern
where they will look to become the first Rollins College basketball
team to finish the year undefeated. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30
p.m. in Fort Lauderdale.
