PENSACOLA, Fla. (November 3, 2006) ' Fresh off
a Sunshine State Conference Tournament championship, the Rollins
College men's soccer team will begin their run in the NCAA South
Region Tournament Friday afternoon against Lynn University.
Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST at the University of West
Florida in Pensacola. Fans can listen live on the Tars Sports
Network at www.RollinsSports.com. Matt
Rowley will be calling the action from the UWF Soccer Complex.
The Tars and Fighting Knights locked horns in an epic battle two
weeks ago with Lynn winning 2-1 in both school's season finale.
Lynn scored just five minutes into the contest, but Rollins tallied
the equalizer at the 20 minute mark. Very spirited play followed
for the next 70 minutes and the game headed into overtime. The
Knights took the victory six minutes into the extra period on a
bang-bang play near the top of the box. That game marked the last
time Lynn took the pitch as they were held out of the SSC
Tournament due to sanctions by the conference for using ineligible
players during the season.
Rollins played some of their best soccer of the season during
the SSC Tournament, defeating Florida Tech and Barry each by scores
of 3-0. The Tars currently stand at 13-5 heading into the NCAA
Regional. This is the Tars third trip to the regional in the past
four years. In 2003 they beat Barry 2-1 in the opener and lost to
Lynn, in Boca Ration, 2-1 in the championship game. The Knights
then went on to complete their undefeated season and capture the
NCAA National Championship. The following year, Rollins was the top
seed and earned hosting duties in Winter Park. They beat Montevallo
in the opener, but fell to Central Arkansas, now a Division II
school, in the final.
